Troy’s mind was clearing now; perhaps the food had helped. As they approached the end of the corridor, a large square area opened up in front of them, with ornate stone steps that flanked the corner of the complex and which led both up and down. He realized they had reached the tower. And was it his imagination, or was there a chill in the air?

“They said to go up,” said Clio.

“Yes. They also said that Megara is a witch. I have met a magical woman by the name of Harmonia, and she was dangerous. Perhaps ‘evil’ is a better word.”

Clio peered at him, patting the shield that she had acquired. “We are Spartan hoplites, Troy. I’m sure we’ll cope.”

“All right, then.” He glanced around him. “Though I wish you had brought a shield for me.”

“It wouldn’t have gone with your outfit. Mind you, that’s already a complete mess. Perhaps you should take it off now? It has served its purpose.”

Troy glanced down, and winced to see that the purple smock was now stained with vomit, greasy food smears and some streaks of blood. He ran the back of his hand across his mouth – more blood was visible, and it came with a system warning:
